ISHCMC Grade 5 – Student Wows Judges in Poster Design Contest

Some of our Studio 5 students recently put their design skills to the test as they participated in a student poster design competition. The contest aimed to select a winning poster to serve for the that takes place on June 14-16, with the theme of ‘Sharing the Planet’.

The competition proved to be a big success as Studio 5 students participated with enthusiasm and put in a lot of effort.

They have all done a great job.

Ms. Emma – the Art Teacher commented.

As a result, choosing the winning poster for the PYP Exhibition was very challenging. Among such a talented pool of young artists, after a lot of deliberation, it was Isabella from 5B who stood out and won the competition with her outstanding and creative poster.

Isabella’s innovative approach and out of the box thought process made her stand out. The inspiration for the poster came from a portrait of an eye her mom hung in her office when she was little. When asked about the meaning of the eye, Isabella stated:

Because you can’t really predict what can happen in the world.

Her hard work and dedication paid off when she was announced as the winner.

I felt really proud of myself because I never thought that I would win the competition.

Isabella said.

She also found it an excellent opportunity to tap into the reality of design.

So that’s what we wanted to do – a real world situation.

Ms. Emma, sharing on the competition idea.

Speaking about the poster contest, Rob Haggett, 91Թ’s Communications Manager and one of the competition’s judges shared,

We were thrilled by the numerous entries and the enthusiasm shown by our students who participated in the competition. Everyone did a great job but a huge congratulations for Isabella for clinching the top spot with her unique design

He went on to say:

A big thank you to Mr. Daniel and Ms. Emma for supporting this project, seeing students’ designs being featured around the school has been fantastic and we do hope to provide more opportunities in the future to showcase our amazing young designers

Isabella’s win in the Studio 5 poster design competition is a testament to the exceptional talent and skills of young artists in our schools. Congratulations, Isabella, and we look forward to seeing more of your incredible work in the future!

Revisiting the Primary Production: A Journey to The Land of Classic Game Characters /news-and-blog/a-journey-to-the-land-of-classic-game-characters/ Wed, 10 May 2023 08:00:26 +0000 /?p=10397 The post Revisiting the Primary Production: A Journey to The Land of Classic Game Characters appeared first on ISHCMC.

Our Primary students took us to a pixelated video game world in a fully packed 3-day Primary Production from April 24-26.

Taking place at our Secondary Theater, ‘Press Start’ was a musical performance performed by our Primary Students which transported us to the pixelated world of video games, coupled with 8-bit synthesizers evoking classic Nintendo and Sega character sounds. We got the chance to see a side of the heroes, villains, and sidekicks we’ve never seen before thanks to amusing and emotional musical numbers.

Reflecting on the students’ performances, Ms. Jennifer Shrine – the coordinator of Press Start, commented:

The students’ performances blew us all away.

In order to bring such moving, funny and entertaining reality, Ms. Jennifer especially highlighted the commitment of the students in regularly attending rehearsals and creating their own colorful props and costumes! (Do note they will be displayed at the upcoming Primary Art Gala, so don’t forget to check them out soon!)

According to Ms. Jennifer, this was the first time a Primary Musical Production was brought to the Secondary Theatre. Thus, the students indeed had to face many challenges in terms of delivering and logistics. However, our students did such great work to overcome those tough obstacles!

The students adapted incredibly well to the big stage, and they transformed under the light and in a real theater. – Ms. Jennifer added.

Besides challenges, there were also hilarious moments that our crew hadn’t expected to come. During the performance, the audience can participate by playing with gold rings. Despite months of practice for calmly passing rings to the center aisles, the excited audience threw nearly 200 rings at the unprepared actors on opening night, causing chaos on stage.

Truly unexpected, slightly scary, but hilarious in retrospect, Ms. Jennifer hilariously shared.

The Primary Production is a great chance for 91Թ students to collaborate on a creative project and enjoy themselves.

Through Press Start, our students have built confidence to take on challenges with confidence and courage – Ms. Jennifer expressed.

Once again, congratulations to our Primary theater superstars and Ms. Jennifer for bringing us such cute and wonderful evenings of performances. Following “Press Start”’ amazing success, as Ms. Jennifer revealed, many Lower Primary students are already expressing interest in joining the next production! We can’t wait to see what’s next!

Rhino Academy is Back for Term 4

Have you, as parents, ever considered taking classes again? If not, it might be worth your while to explore Rhino Academy, an exclusive educational series for ISHCMC parents.

This program offers engaging and informative classes, workshops, and more, covering a diverse range of topics such as cooking, yoga, and digital design, taught by specialized teachers and parents of 91Թ.

Despite being labeled as “classes,” which might sound intimidating to some, the Rhino Academy sessions go beyond mere instructions. The sessions offer parents the opportunity to actively ‘be a part’ of the 91Թ community that their children are already a part of. By learning new skills and experiences, parents can gain insights into how 91Թ delivers education. Furthermore, Ms. Evan Johnson – the coordinator of the program also shared that parents can recall their past school life by:

Learning, struggling with unfamiliar knowledge and creating memories.

Although classes are English based, our instructors aim to make the lessons simple to understand. During class discussions with fellow parents and instructors, parents can improve their language skills and adapt to the language in a realistic context. For those who have concerns about language barriers, Mrs. Mayu Murata, the co-coordinator of the program, highly encourages you to sign-up for the series since this would be:

A great chance to step into the English community that 91Թ can offer to our parents.

Mrs. Mayu Murata and Ms. Evan Johnson - The coordinators of Rhino Academy

Please check the class offerings at this Rhino Academy Padlet, and register for classes at the enrollment form. Enrollment is open from 7:00 PM on Monday, April 17 – 8:00 AM on Friday, May 05, and the five-week classes begin in May.

ISHCMC Canteen Improvements & Future Plans

has introduced various measurements for quality improvements and accessibility of food for our students. At the Primary campus, they have reintroduced a Vietnamese Soup Station, a Taco Bowl Counter, and a “make your own wrap” counter, while at the Secondary campus, a new “express” counter was trialed and installed, providing popular snacks, smoothies, and juices. Global Cafe, in collaboration with the Primary Leadership Team, parents and students, has also created a “Nutrition Team” to develop and implement new initiatives, such as the “Salad Boat” that offers fresh raw vegetables during lunchtime.

To encourage healthy eating habits, under the initiative of the Nutrition Team at Primary, Global Cafe have also launched a program called “Students serving Students”. The program encourages students to learn about food service, safety, and hospitality by participating in the daily food service at the “make your own wrap” station, under the supervision of the principal and Global Cafe. It has grown from 2 to almost 20 student volunteers, and the results have been impressive, with education and encouragement coming from their peers.

Moving forward, Global Cafe has set out several goals for the future improvements to its food services. They aim to implement a Smart Card system across both campuses and also plan to introduce a “Nutritious” option of the day, with a menu to be designed by both Global Cafe and the community. Additionally, the organization intends to work closely with farms that support the best growing practices to implement a “farm to table” program for raw vegetables, chicken, and eggs. Lastly, they are reviewing service times, schedules, and operations to implement new service styles, options, and layouts for the upcoming academic year.

Introduction of Summer Camps at 91Թ

After the success of our previous summer camps at 91Թ since 2018, we are delighted to offer three unique summer camps for the summer of 2023 in collaboration with 91Թ. These camps are open to students aged 5 to 15 from any school in Ho Chi Minh City and will run for five weeks (25 days) with a different theme each week.

Many summer camps offered by other schools and language centers can be very basic and generic, simply using generic study materials that are often outdated and not engaging for children. While these camps may provide some basic English language skills, they lack the personalized and student-centered approach that is essential for students to truly excel.

At Inspire Educamps, we believe that mindset is at the heart of everything we do. Our summer camps are designed to be engaging, interactive, and relevant to the needs of our students. We take great care to ensure that our programs are tailored to the individual needs and learning styles of each student, so that they can make the most of their time with us.

Our approach is different from other schools and language centers because we believe that learning should be fun and meaningful. We use a variety of engaging activities and projects to help students build important life skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication. By incorporating these skills into our summer camps, we help students develop a positive mindset and empower and motivate children to become lifelong learners!

Mindset Summer Camp - 91Թ Secondary Campus (5- 15 years old)

Summer Camps at 91Թ

Relive some of the best moments from the World Food Festival!

Last Saturday’s World Food Fest was a fantastic success! The event brought together students, parents, teachers, and staff to celebrate the incredibly diverse culture represented in our school community. At the food festival, parent country representatives ran food booths offering their own traditional dishes for everyone to try, and students showcased their respective countries with lively performances. The event was a melting pot of cultures, and it was a truly unforgettable experience for everyone who attended.

Our Primary Campus was filled with wonderful smells from across the world, and the sounds of the music and laughter filled the venue. The booths were decorated with flags and other traditional items, creating a truly immersive experience. Visitors could sample a wide range of delicious food!

The performances by the students were a highlight of the event. Each group had prepared a dance or song representing their country, and the performances were a feast for the eyes and ears. The audience cheered and clapped along, enjoying the wonderful display of talent and cultural richness.

Our community is very diverse, with students and families from all over the world. The World Food Fest is an opportunity for everyone to come together and celebrate this diversity. It is a chance to learn about different cultures, to try new foods, and to make new friends.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to all the parent country representatives who worked tirelessly to make the event a success. Without their hard work and dedication, the World Food Fest would not have been possible. We are truly grateful for their efforts.

More photos of the event will be shared soon, so keep an eye out for them on the Rhino Hub and social media channels. We hope that everyone who attended the World Food Fest had a fantastic time and that it helped to foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of our diverse community.

Celebrating Diversity: Effective Ways to Promote Inclusivity in International Schools /news-and-blog/celebrating-diversity-effective-ways-to-promote-inclusivity-in-international-schools/ Wed, 22 Mar 2023 05:07:49 +0000 /?p=9699 The post Celebrating Diversity: Effective Ways to Promote Inclusivity in International Schools appeared first on ISHCMC.

Celebrating diversity effective ways to promote inclusivity in international schools

International schools are increasingly becoming a popular choice for parents who want their children to receive a culturally diverse and academically rigorous education.

With increased Diversity comes the responsibility of creating a safe and welcoming learning environment for all students. Promoting anti-racism in the school setting is one of the best ways to ensure this. This thought leadership post will explore how educators and parents can work together to create a culture of respect and acceptance in the school community.

Create an Equity Statement:

The first step in promoting anti-racism in any school setting is to create a clear equity statement or policy outlining unacceptable behavior. The message should include language that explicitly addresses racism and other forms of discrimination, such as sexism, homophobia, and ableism. It’s essential to clearly outline the consequences for violating the policy so that everyone understands what will happen if the agreements are not respected.

What ISHCMC does:

We have established an equity statement and in 23/24 will communicate clearly to all students, staff, and parents the agreements within that statement as well as the consequences of not adhering to the agreements.

Provide Education on Diversity:

For students to understand why anti-racism is critical and how to promote it within their schools, they need opportunities to learn from one another. Learnings could include classroom discussions about different cultures and identities or educational assemblies featuring guest speakers from underrepresented backgrounds. It’s also essential to ensure teachers are knowledgeable about diversity issues to facilitate these discussions effectively.

What 91Թ does:

  • Provide space and time for students to engage in difficult conversations
  • Ask students to reflect on their identity and who they are
  • Engage in discussions about stereotypes and racism
  • Reflect on what it means to be a global citizen
  • Consider ways in which our mission focuses on attributes of DEIJAB+
  • Help students to understand and focus on the DEIJ language
  • Connect the Learner Profile to sense of self

Encourage Student Involvement

In addition to providing educational resources on diversity topics, it’s necessary to actively involve students in creating a culture of respect within their school community. Create student groups or clubs focusing on social justice issues or through activities like holding schoolwide rallies or protests against racism or bigotry. It’s also beneficial for students to have regular, varied opportunities for dialogue about sensitive subject matters so that everyone feels comfortable expressing their thoughts without fear of judgment or ridicule.

What 91Թ does:

  • Provide a safe environment for students to advocate for themselves concerning issues connected to DEIJAB+
  • Use the POSISH programme to provide a space for students to express themselves freely

Promoting anti-racism in international school settings takes time and effort but ultimately leads to stronger communities where everyone feels respected regardless of race or cultural background. By establishing clear policies on racism and discrimination, providing education on diversity topics, and encouraging student involvement, educators and parents can work together towards creating a safe learning environment where all members feel welcome and accepted. With dedication from both sides, we can make sure our international schools are places where every child has an equal opportunity to succeed without fear of prejudice or hate speech.

ISHCMC Celebration of Cultures 2022 | 91Թ

Last week, our annual Celebration of Cultures took place throughout 91Թ. A fantastic day where our entire community comes together and celebrates how diverse we are.

Check this recap video below:

With country booths held at both our Primary and Secondary and a huge Flag parade celebration to round of the week, it was a fantastic occasion!

The energy on both campuses during Celebration of Cultures Week was incredibly fun and rejuvenating.

Evan Johnson, Events & Community Outreach Manager

Sharing on the event, Evan Johnson, Events & Community Outreach Manager, “The energy on both campuses during Celebration of Cultures Week was incredibly fun and rejuvenating, and our parents, students, and facilities team deserve a big round of applause for making it so special.”

Reflecting on what the event means for 91Թ, Evan said, “It really is special that we can celebrate diversity in this way. It’s a reminder to not take for granted that we’re able to celebrate different traditional dress, games, music, and cultural customs from around the world all in one place, safely and with joy. In some corners of the world, diversity is not safe; diversity is even considered a threat. Our celebration sends a great message to our students and community that not only is it safe to be diverse and inclusive, but it’s appreciated and it’s welcome. That’s ultimately why we have these opportunities”.

A huge thank you to our amazing PTO, and Community Engagement Team for all their hard work putting on this event! It was wonderful to once again all be together and a great reminder of how incredible our community is.

IB vs British Curriculum And Others

The International Baccalaureate (IB School) – What is it? Why is it good for my child? If it’s so good, then why have I not heard about it before?

For many parents, whose school experience may seem like a distant memory, making a decision about your child’s education programme is rightly a daunting task. In fact, most parents are often never faced with this decision due to the nature of a national curriculum. As with a host of other decisions that must be made when moving countries, this decision can often feel like the most difficult.

For over 40 years an International Baccalaureate (IB) education has helped future generations cross the boundaries that separate languages, countries and cultures. Today, the IB continues that tradition providing a continuum of international education that features four high quality programmes for students from 3-19 years old.

The IB consists of three individual programmes. The , and the . While each of these qualifications forms a pathway into the next, they can also be studied independently of one another. Consequently, you may find that some schools offer all three qualifications, while others only offer one or two. Any school wishing to offer one or more of the IB programs must first be authorized to become an IB World School through the International Baccalaureate organization.

What makes the IB different from state-based national curriculums?

1. Global Recognition & Outlook

The IB develops inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through education that builds intercultural understanding and respect. One of the central aims of the IB is to promote intercultural understanding and respect, not as an alternative to a sense of cultural and national identity, but as an essential part of life in the 21st century.

The IB is taught to over 1,950,000 students in 5,400 schools across 159 countries.

2. Well-rounded Education

The IB programmes develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who are motivated to succeed, giving students distinct advantages by building their critical thinking skills, nurturing their curiosity and their ability to solve complex problems. A key advantage of the IB is that it allows students to hone in on their areas of strength and, through development, improve on areas of weakness. As such, students are exposed to a much larger breadth of subjects than most national curriculums – one of the reasons why the IB is considered so challenging.

3. University Preparation

The IB Diploma is effectively designed to prepare learners for university, in that it teaches you skills and ways of learning that will set you up to do well at a tertiary education level. The heavy workload and the idea that students in the IB, ‘learn to learn’, mean that IB students are often well prepared for university life.

For example, DP students were three times more likely than similar A level students to enroll in a top 20 higher educational institution (Duxbury et a., 2021).

4. Curriculum Structure

A key difference between the IB and other state-based curricula is the curriculum structure. In the IB Diploma Programme, IB students must study one subject from the arts, sciences, humanities, mathematics, as well as English and a foreign language. On average, three of these subjects are taken at a “higher level”, where students must show greater knowledge, understanding and skill. The other three subjects are taken at a “standard level”. Students also complete a 100-hour subject on the theory of knowledge and write a 4000-word extended essay on a topic of their choice. As well as academic requirements students must participate in creative, sporting and service activities.
