Devin, Class of 2026: From 91勛圖厙 to Seoul National University

After 12 years and an international math medal, Devin is off to study Physics at Seoul National University.

For a student who has spent 12 years at 91勛圖厙 chasing the question of why things work the way they do, it’s a fitting next chapter.

“Physics intrigues me because it lets me use mathematics to understand what’s going on around us,” he says. “A phrase I always like for physics is, ‘Everything happens for a reason.”

That curiosity has been there from the start. Devin has been competing in math competitions since fourth grade, always looking for a harder problem to solve. Earlier this year, that path took him to Imperial College London for the World Mathematics Championship Senior Finals, where he spent a week in university dorms solving problems alongside some of the most talented young mathematicians in the world. He came home with the individual high-point medal.

His Extended Essay pushed the same instinct further, examining how braking force in bicycle hydraulic disc brakes affects the angular deceleration of a wheel. The topic was technical, but what stayed with him was the process.

“It kind of felt like I was writing an actual academic paper,” he says. “Conducting experiments, interpreting data, evaluating errors, it was all new to me, and more rewarding than anything else I’ve done here.”

Math was never the whole story. Over 12 years Devin also swam with the 91勛圖厙 Stingrays and performed with the 91勛圖厙 Orchestra, the kind of full involvement he credits to the school itself.

"The learning experience at 91勛圖厙 is challenging but rewarding," he reflects. "I can't think of anything I learned that was useless. Everything gave me a sense of accomplishment."

As he leaves, Devin has a message for the rest of the Class of 2026: “I know all of you are talented. Keep shining your way, and make your own path if you have to. You will make it, and I really emphasize the ‘will.'”

And for the physicist he hopes to be five years from now? “Keep going. You know who you are.”

Empower Your Child Future at 91勛圖厙

At 91勛圖厙, we don’t manage children toward outcomes. We build the conditions where their particular kind of brilliance finds its direction. That’s the legacy we’re carrying forward – one student at a time.

Where Passion Meets Purpose: Celebrating Our Grade 10 Personal Projects

Over the past six months, our Grade 10 students dedicated themselves to transforming their passion ideas into impactful products, which they proudly shared at the Personal Project Fair and Celebration.

At 91勛圖厙, we are committed to supporting and challenging students to become confident, independent learners who are prepared for the future. The Personal Project is a powerful reflection of this commitment where students build and demonstrate independent research, critical thinking, and self-reflection, which are foundational skills for success in the Diploma Programme and beyond.

Academically, the Personal Project is a cornerstone for Grade 10 students, representing the culmination of five years of learning in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) through student-led inquiry, action, and reflection.

Through this year-long process, students are challenged to explore a topic of personal interest, conduct extensive research, create a product with real-world impact or provoke a meaningful call-to-action, and reflect on their learning.

Each Personal Project is more than a testament to the rigor, challenge, and purpose that define learning at 91勛圖厙. It is a students passion brought to life.

This years Personal Project Fair was filled with innovation and creativity, displaying projects with a wide range of interests. From creating an online gallery to the universe, manufacturing custom socks for dancers, to developing a beginner-friendly running plan, and sewing a princess dress, the projects reflected not only students dedication to independent learning, but also their identities, interests, and desire to make meaningful contributions to the community.

One of the first students to present at the fair, Emerson, captured the audiences attention with a Spanish quote as he introduced his Personal Project: a comprehensive bible for stage management. As a dedicated student-actor in our Secondary Theatre Productions, Emerson shared that the process provided him the space to explore a possible future pathway, and also reinforced my passion for acting.

Another Grade 10 student, Tiara, approached raising awareness about highly stigmatized issues, eating disorders, with a completely different spin. She leveraged her strength for writing and explored the disorders through a creative lens. This project showed me the severity of mental health, and influenced the way I approached people, shared Tiara.

Her peer, Saeah, decided to utilize this independent learning opportunity to build foundational skills for animation, her passion for her future career. Upon encountering several difficulties in this year-long project, she noted that the experience gave her valuable insight for her university journey and beyond.

The Personal Project represents success not only in the final product, but in the growth our students experience along the way: learning to set goals, overcome challenges, utilize strengths, and take ownership of their learning.

ISHCMC Reflects on Outstanding 2025 MYP Personal Project Achievements

The International School Ho Chi Minh City (91勛圖厙) proudly reflects on the outstanding achievements of last years Grade 10 students in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) Personal Project – a powerful demonstration of inquiry, innovation, and academic independence.

In the 2024-25 academic year, 91勛圖厙 students achieved an impressive average score of 5.31 out of 7, outperforming the global average of 3.94 by 35%. Nearly half of all students (47%) achieved scores of 6 or 7, showcasing the schools enduring commitment to academic rigor, guided reflection, and personalized learning.

The Personal Project serves as the MYPs culminating experience, challenging students to design, research, and execute original work with real-world impact. Through developing Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills -from organization and research to critical reflection – students learn how to think, not just what to learn.

At 91勛圖厙, inquiry and reflection are the foundation of achievement, said Marco Longmore, Head of School. We continue to be immensely proud of last years Grade 10 cohort for the independence and creativity they demonstrated -and equally proud of our current students building on that legacy of excellence.

The Personal Project is the ultimate test of a students ability to manage a self-directed project, said Adam Abbas, Secondary Personal Project Coordinator. It unites the key skills developed throughout the MYP – research, organization, evaluation, and reflection. These are the same competencies that lead to success in the IB Diploma Programme, university, and the workplace. Our students show remarkable independence and resilience, applying strategic thinking and creativity that prepare them to thrive beyond the classroom.

The projects reflect 91勛圖厙s interdisciplinary strength – from renewable energy engineering and creative writing to digital art and anatomy. Each demonstrate the schools emphasis on authentic inquiry, creativity, and global citizenship – core to 91勛圖厙s mission as Vietnams first and leading IB World School.

As the 202526 Grade 10 students embark on their Personal Project journeys, 91勛圖厙 celebrates their predecessors accomplishments while nurturing the next generation of confident, compassionate learners.

Moments that Matter: Grade 4 Students Bring Their Stories to Life

Our Grade 4 students have been exploring the art of storytelling through personal narratives – writing about special moments in their lives that shaped who they are. From joyful family memories to challenges theyve overcome, each story captures their unique voice and creativity.

Read our Grade 4 students stories!

Through this project, our young writers learned how to express their thoughts and feelings through both words and illustrations. They discovered that storytelling is more than just writing, its a way to connect, reflect, and share experiences that matter. Writing narratives also helps build empathy, strengthen communication skills, and boost confidence in self-expression.

Class of 2025: Beyond the Numbers: A Celebration of Growth, Excellence, and Global Readiness

As the International Baccalaureate (IB) results for 2025 are released worldwide, we are proud to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of the International School Ho Chi Minh City (91勛圖厙) Class of 2025. These results represent more than academic benchmarks; they reflect individual growth stories, a thriving learning culture, and a deep commitment to nurturing both minds and hearts.

A Record-Breaking Year for 91勛圖厙

This years graduating cohort of 109 students marks a record-high in 91勛圖厙 history, a testament to the schools growing reputation as a regional leader in IB education. Among these students, 87 were full IBDP candidates and 15 pursued IB Courses, with 85 students successfully earning the full IB Diploma, resulting in an impressive 98% diploma pass rate. This is significantly higher than the 2024 global average of 81%, and an increase from 91勛圖厙s 96% pass rate in the previous year.

Our students average score of 34 points places them 3.5 points above the global mean of 30.58, reaffirming the strength of 91勛圖厙s academic program and support structures.

While were incredibly proud of this years IB Diploma results, what matters most is how each student arrived at their successthrough perseverance, curiosity, and a love of learning that extends beyond the classroom.

Mr. Marco Longmore, Head of School

ISHCMC by the Numbers: Class of 2025 IB Results

Average score 34 points 30.58 points
Students scoring 35+ points 44% N/A
Students scoring 30+ points 83% N/A
Bilingual Diplomas awarded 53% 23%

These figures not only demonstrate academic excellence, but also signal a consistent upward trajectory:

  • 40+ scorers remain steady in high performance, with 6 students achieving this prestigious threshold.
  • The proportion of students scoring 35+ increased from 39% in 2024 to 44% this year.
  • The number of students scoring 30+ rose from 77% to 83%, showing improved depth and balance across the cohort.

A Culture of Multilingualism and International-Mindedness

One of 91勛圖厙s standout achievements this year is the remarkable number of students earning the IB Bilingual Diploma. With 53% of our Diploma graduates awarded this recognition, 91勛圖厙 students significantly outpaced the global rate of 23%. This milestone highlights our commitment to multilingualism, cultural fluency, and global citizenship – essential traits for thriving in todays interconnected world.

From Early Learners to Empowered Graduates

Our 109 graduates this year represent a diverse range of educational journeys. Some graduates began their educational journey with us at just two years old. Many have been part of ISHCMC’s IB Continuum, moving seamlessly from the Primary Years Programme (PYP) to the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and into the IBDP, benefiting from a consistent inquiry-based approach.

These varied pathways have nurtured a cohort of adaptable, internationally minded individuals, each empowered to pursue their unique interests and goals. 91勛圖厙s distinct model emphasizes personalized graduation pathways, supported by expert teachers, IB coordinators, and university counselors who help each student flourish according to their strengths and ambitions.

Stories Behind the Scores

While we celebrate the numbers, it is the stories behind those numbers that truly define this cohort. From Theory of Knowledge (TOK) essays that challenge assumptions to Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) projects making a real-world impact in local communities, our students have demonstrated leadership, resilience, and empathy in action.

Our learners are not just passing exams - theyre writing research papers that matter, leading environmental initiatives, composing original music, and organising mental health awareness campaigns. This is what the IB is designed for. This is what 91勛圖厙 delivers.

Ms. Laney Rweyemamu, IBDP Programme

Their journeys reflect not just academic mastery, but also wellbeing, global awareness, and purpose-driven learningcore pillars of our educational philosophy.

Looking Ahead

As they now prepare to join top universities around the world, the Class of 2025 leaves with more than a diploma. They leave with a foundation built on our values: curiosity, achievement, resilience, and empathy, and the skills to lead, collaborate, and contribute meaningfully to a rapidly changing world.

Student Visa Barriers in 2025: Why Families Are Rethinking Overseas Education /news-and-blog/us-student-visa/ Wed, 18 Jun 2025 05:03:14 +0000 /?p=21497 The post Student Visa Barriers in 2025: Why Families Are Rethinking Overseas Education appeared first on ISHCMC.

Student Visa Barriers in 2025: Why Families Are Rethinking Overseas Education

In 2025, many families are facing unexpected roadblocks in their global education plans. New visa restrictions in the U.S., Canada, and Australia are making it harder and riskier to secure study abroad opportunities. But what if the answer isn’t overseas at all?

A growing number of families are now discovering that world-class international education can be found right here in Vietnam.

Thousands of families are now reassessing their plans as the U.S. cancels international student visas, leaving many in limbo.

Canadas student visa cap and the rising rate of rejections, often caused by missing financial proof or incomplete documentation, have made families question whether taking the risk is worthwhile.

Australias student visa process now includes tougher English requirements and stricter financial scrutiny.

For Vietnamese families who invested years planning a global education pathway, this is more than a disruption. It feels like the entire playbook has changed.

The good news? There are strong, future-ready options right here in Vietnam.

Understanding the Current Reality

Over the last decade, families have followed a familiar path:

  1. Enroll children in international boarding schools abroad
  2. Prepare them for top universities in the U.S., Canada, UK, or Australia
  3. Trust that visa systems will accommodate deserving students

But todays headlines tell a different story:

  • U.S. embassies have paused new student visa appointments indefinitely
  • Canada has capped international student numbers for 2025 and 2026
  • Australia has introduced stricter English testing and financial requirements for student visas

This is no longer a short-term challenge. Its a structural change in how countries are managing international students.

Understanding the Current Reality

How to Protect Your Childs Academic Future During Global Visa Disruption

In moments like this, families face two major concerns:

  1. How do we avoid academic disruption for our child?
  2. Will choosing a Vietnam international school limit their chances of getting into a top university?

The answer to both: Not if you choose the right environment.

How to Protect Your Childs Academic Future During Global Visa Disruption

A growing number of families are now rethinking the need to send children overseas during high school and instead opting for world-class international education in Vietnamoffering global credentials, stable learning, and direct university pathways.

What to Look for in a Local International School

Not all schools can deliver the same academic credibility or flexibility as a boarding school abroad. Look for:

  • Multiple graduation pathways: IB Diploma, AP, U.S. High School Diploma, or blended programs
  • University counseling: Dedicated experts supporting global admissions and scholarships
  • International accreditation: NEASC, IB World School status, or College Board recognition
  • Subject depth: Advanced academic offerings such as AP Courses, IB Courses, or Extended Essays
  • Transfer readiness: Schools with experience supporting mid-year or emergency transfers

What to Look for in a Local International School

These features ensure that your child can continue building their academic portfolio without falling behindand remain competitive for universities in the U.S., UK, Canada, Europe, and Asia.

ISHCMC: Vietnams Global-Standard School Network for University-Bound Students

Among the schools stepping up in this critical moment are the International School Ho Chi Minh City (91勛圖厙) and its sister institutionISHCMC-American Academy.

What makes these schools uniquely equipped to help?

  • Multiple Academic Pathways:
  • IB Diploma Programme (DP) for students seeking global university entry
  • AP Courses and AP Capstone Program for students targeting U.S. college admissions
  • NEASC-accredited U.S. High School Diploma for broader flexibility across international universities
  • Stand-alone IB or AP Courses to support credit transfer or build transcripts for competitive majors
  • Transfer Support: Experienced admissions and academic leadership teams work directly with families to assess transcripts, plan catch-up support, and personalize academic planning for students coming from disrupted environments.
  • University Counseling & Results: Each school has a track record of placing students in top global universities. Counseling support includes application strategy, personal statement coaching, interview prep, and financial aid navigation.
  • Community & Continuity: Students enter a diverse, globally minded environment with mental health support, extracurriculars, and leadership programsall helping them regain a sense of belonging and motivation.

91勛圖厙: Vietnams Global-Standard School Network for University-Bound Students

Conclusion: A New Chapter, Not the End

While the original plan may no longer be possible, its not the end of the road. In fact, for many students, this moment can become a pivot pointa chance to find stability, reconnect with home, and prepare for university with even greater focus.

Vietnam now offers educational options once only available overseas. For families facing the uncertainty of 2025, the smartest move may be closer than you think.

Strong Foundations, Bright Futures: Why Early Years Matter

Every moment from birth to age five shapes your child for life. Research shows that 90% of brain development happens before the age of five, making these early years the most critical window for learning, growth, and development. At 91勛圖厙, our Early Explorers (EE) program is designed with this in mind, offering a world-class start that builds confidence, capability, and curiosity from day one.

The Foundations for Learning and Life

In our Early Years classrooms, children develop foundational skills in symbolic expression, skills essential for literacy, communication, and early mathematics. These include writing, mark-making, storytelling, verbal and non-verbal communication, and early mathematical thinking.

These capabilities emerge through authentic, play-based learning, where inquiry is led by the child and scaffolded by skilled educators. Ongoing teacher observation ensures that each child meets important developmental benchmarks in communication, conceptual understanding, and problem-solving.

Every space is a provocation for learning. Our role is to guide discovery, not dictate it.

Leanne Le, Early Explorers Curriculum Coordinator

More Than Readiness: A Whole-Child Approach

At 91勛圖厙, learning doesnt just prepare children for the next stage of school, it prepares them for life. Our Early Explorers program nurtures the whole child: intellectually, socially, and emotionally. From their first day, children are supported by the POSISH wellbeing framework, helping them to build confidence, independence, and strong relationships with others.

This holistic approach ensures that children not only learn, but thrive, building resilience, empathy, and the joy of learning along the way.

Designed for Young Learners to Flourish

Our purpose-built Early Years environments are intentionally crafted to inspire inquiry, movement, and creativity. Classrooms and shared spaces have been thoughtfully renovated to support the developmental needs of young children, aligned with our Reggio-inspired philosophy.

Children are immersed in beautiful, engaging spaces that invite exploration and give them a sense of safety, comfort, and belonging.

The Early Years Matter Most

Research is clear: quality early education leads to better academic outcomes, stronger social skills, and greater emotional wellbeing throughout life. At 91勛圖厙, we ensure that every childs early years experience is rich, intentional, and filled with purpose.

Zidane (Class of 2025): Following the Rhythm of Passion

For Zidane, passion has always been his guiding force. From the rhythms of South Africa to the experimental sounds of Vietnam, his love for music has shaped not only how he sees the world but how he connects with it.

Zidane was awarded The Global Citizen at The Learner Profile Awards 2025

In recognition of his cultural awareness, compassion, and curiosity, Zidane was named The Global Citizen at the 2025 Learner Profile Awards. For him, music is more than just sound, its a gateway to history and culture:

I have fallen in love with the stories music tells, both in lyrics and context, naturally mixing with my interest in history. I remember listening to Umm Kulthum with my mom and understanding the importance of her life to the development of Egyptian national pride. Understanding how music reflects historical events is why I love learning about the two subjects in tandem.

Zidane reflects on what drives him: Music has always been my way of understanding the places I live, he explains. From Ladysmith Black Mambazo in South Africa to Okean Elzy in Ukraine and R廕疸 C廕︾ u繫i in Vietnam, music helps me connect with my surroundings. This deep curiosity became a guiding thread throughout his time at 91勛圖厙, where he explored the intersection of music and history both creatively and academically.

Zidane presented at the Extended Essay on November 2024 (Grade 12)

Though his journey at 91勛圖厙 began in Grade 11, Zidane made the most of every moment. Short and sweet, he says, reflecting on his time at our school. One of his proudest moments was presenting his Extended Essay on Zamrock, a genre born in 1970s Zambia. It was a chance to share something I care deeply about, he recalls.

91勛圖厙 taught me to look at my passions through an academic lens.

In his next chapter, Zidane has decided to continue pursuing history and politics in the university as he has received offers from University of Edinburgh and Trinity College Dublin. Harmony in Motion: How Hien Made 16 Years at 91勛圖厙 Count

As graduation approaches for the Class of 2025, one student who truly stands out is Hien Vu from Grade 12.2. Having been part of the 91勛圖厙 community for nearly 16 years, Hien was recently awarded The Balanced Learnerat this years Learner Profile Awards – a title that perfectly reflects how she has stayed focused on academics while also embracing life beyond the classroom.

Hiens secret? Perseverance.

There were times when everything felt overwhelming. But 91勛圖厙 taught me how to keep going, even when things got tough, Hien shared. That perseverance shaped not only my academic success but also my personal growth, helping me become more confident, balanced, and self-aware.

At school, Hien is passionate about math and science. She enjoys sharing ideas and helping others see how exciting these subjects can be. Outside the classroom, she finds joy in music – especially in how it brings people together, helps them relax, and makes them happy.

Hien performed in the Primary Production in 2017 - already showcasing her passion for music.

One of her proudest moments at 91勛圖厙 was hosting two inter-school math competitions. This experience pushed her outside of her comfort zone, encouraged collaboration with teachers and peers, and allowed her to take on a leadership role. She remembers how inspiring it was to see students from different schools come together to celebrate problem-solving. It was incredibly rewarding to gather young people who shared the same passion for math, she said.

Looking back on her journey, Hien reflected:

Im proud not just of what we accomplished, but of how much I grew as a person through the experience. It reminded me of the joy that comes from collective effort and the impact we can make when we work together with purpose.

When asked to describe her 91勛圖厙 journey in three words, Hien chose: Engaging, Inspiring, Perseverance.

For her, learning at 91勛圖厙 was never just about grades. It was about curiosity, deep thinking, and making real-world connections.

What made 91勛圖厙 special was that learning often went beyond the classroom, she explained. It taught me how to use what I learn to help others and create positive change, no matter how small.

One project that made a lasting impact on Hien was her Grade 10 Personal Project. It allowed her to explore a topic she deeply cared about and sparked her love for academic research – something she hopes to continue pursuing in the future.

Looking back, the Personal Project wasnt just an academic task - it was an experience that helped me understand who I am, what excites me and what direction I want to take in the future.

Looking ahead, Hien is excited to face new challenges and study in a more advanced academic environment. If she could give a message to her future self five years from now, she would say:

Always be open to new opportunities and continue to have a thirst for knowledge no matter the obstacles life may present.

To her classmates, she shares this message of encouragement: Good luck in whatever you choose to pursue – and always have faith in yourself.

And to 91勛圖厙, Hien says:

Thank you for becoming a second home and nurturing my love for learning.

Hiens story is a powerful reminder to all students: when you learn to balance your time and energy, you can truly enjoy school life to the fullest. Its not always easybut with perseverance, anything is possible.
