Moments that Matter: Grade 4 Students Bring Their Stories to Life

Our Grade 4 students have been exploring the art of storytelling through personal narratives – writing about special moments in their lives that shaped who they are. From joyful family memories to challenges theyve overcome, each story captures their unique voice and creativity.

Read our Grade 4 students stories!

Through this project, our young writers learned how to express their thoughts and feelings through both words and illustrations. They discovered that storytelling is more than just writing, its a way to connect, reflect, and share experiences that matter. Writing narratives also helps build empathy, strengthen communication skills, and boost confidence in self-expression.

The Intensive English Language Program is a transformative opportunity for students seeking to unlock their full potential. By enrolling in the IELP program, students can embark on an immersive learning experience tailored to their needs, enabling them to catch up and thrive academically.

Arriving from Japan, Ms. Nao was met with an overwhelmingly positive response from the 91勛圖厙 community. From the helpful and kind teachers to supportive parents, her children and her have been able to flourish in their new environment. As a new parent, she appreciated the willingness of the school to answer all of her questions and guide her through the unfamiliar territory. “They are not just checking, but they conscientiously answer every one of my questions. Ms. Nao commented.泭

Ms. Naos older daughter enrolled in the Intensive English Language Program and was very quickly impressed with her performance. Its very beneficial for [her] in terms of building up skills – like speaking skills, writing skills, and reading skills. [She] loves that and is willing to learn more, Ms. Nao explains.泭

Empowering Connections & Building Wellbeing

At the heart of the IELP lies an emphasis on creating connections and fostering holistic development. Students are encouraged to engage with peers and teachers from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, allowing them to broaden their perspectives and build lasting friendships. The program offers numerous opportunities for collaborative projects, both within and outside the IELP learning hub, nurturing students’ social and emotional growth.

A hallmark of the IELP is its focus on kindness, balance, and wellbeing. IELP students are provided with the same opportunities as mainstream students to participate in wellbeing programs and activities, ensuring a healthy balance between academic studies and extracurricular engagement. The program aims to mold curious, courageous, and confident individuals who take responsibility for their own learning and thrive in an immersive environment.

Seamless Integration into Mainstream Classes

While the IELP curriculum is modified to accommodate students at varying stages of English language acquisition, the content remains aligned with the mainstream International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP). This means that students in the IELP receive the same high-quality education and are held to the same academic standards as their classmates.

Students in the IELP benefit from a holistic approach that ensures individual success. Daily individualized feedback, project work, assessments, and online tools help monitor progress in English reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Furthermore, IELP Advisory provides holistic pastoral care and regular social, emotional, and academic check-ins. Students also have the opportunity to engage with the wider 91勛圖厙 community through co-curricular activities, drama productions, music, and athletics, fostering a sense of belonging and integration.

Experienced Faculty and Innovative Teaching Methods

The IELP faculty consists of highly skilled and experienced educators dedicated to supporting students on their language acquisition journey. Led by the IELP Coordinator, the team brings a wealth of expertise in language instruction and sociolinguistics, ensuring a comprehensive and effective learning experience.

Innovative teaching methods are employed to maximize language acquisition, combining inquiry-based learning and an International Baccalaureate (IB)-style education model. Class of 2023 Last Day Assembly

The Class of 2023 Last Day Assembly for our beloved Grade 12 was filled with love, laughter and enjoyment from all of the 91勛圖厙 students, parents, teachers and staff.

The annual Clap Out section was indeed one of the most awaited celebrations on this day. Traveling from the Primary Campus to the Secondary Campus, Grade 12 got the chance to visit the primary campus again. Immersing in the energetic music, the whole school resounded with enthusiastic and tremendous applause coming from the students clap out, marking our Grade 12s last day at 91勛圖厙.

Not only does the celebration allow our Grade 12 students to have the chance to appreciate the invaluable contribution of every member of 91勛圖厙 to their journey, it also sets the high expectation for our Little Rhinos to be prepared for their upcoming learning adventure.

Additionally, the memorable assembly with meaningful speeches, farewell lunch and uniform filled with signatures from schoolmates are indeed core memories that our Grade 12 students would never forget.

On one hand, Grade 12 students have successfully completed their last year of high school, and the future seems bright with endless opportunities awaiting them. On the other hand, this marks the end of the journey they have all been on together at 91勛圖厙, just as Mrs. Kim Green – The Head of School stated:

Grade 12, you have taken responsibility for your own learning journey. You have remained energized and engaged and are taken control of your own destinies!

Throughout our time in high school, Grade 12 have all faced challenges and overcome obstacles. They have dealt with rigorous coursework, but through it all, we have persevered. As Robert Rosado – The President of the Student Executive Team expressed:

We can choose to grow on those mistakes and let them divide us, or we can choose to learn from them and grow stronger

It is through these challenges that our Grade 12 have become stronger, more resilient individuals, capable of tackling whatever life throws their way.

Now, as time has come, we have to say goodbye to each other and move on to the next phase of our lives. We know that our Grade 12 will confidently face new challenges ahead and be successful wherever they are. Good luck with your upcoming exams and we cant wait until the graduation ceremony to see you in your gown and cap!

Congratulations, Class of 2023, we did it!

Lets go Rhinos Lets go!

Grade 10 Students Excel in MYP Personal Projects at 91勛圖厙

Recently, our Grade 10 students completed their MYP Personal Project, during which they worked on meaningful projects inspired by local community needs

As an world school, ISHCMC always strives for students to take charge of their own learning and support them in building future-ready skills so they may flourish in a world that is changing quickly and make a difference. With that being said, one of the opportunities students can have at 91勛圖厙 is working on their MYP project.

Students can develop the characteristics of the IB learner profile with the MYP (Middle Years Programme) personal project. It supports their growth as independent, lifelong learners and gives them a crucial opportunity to put into practice and deepen the approaches to learning skills they have learned throughout the MYP.

The students spent almost a year creating innovative solutions to contribute to positive changes in society and then presented them to the 91勛圖厙 community. You can learn more about the project by checking out the 3 interviews with our G10 students in the clips found in this article.

Thanks to the diversity and the creativity of our Grade 10 students many interesting innovations were being presented, namely the swimming training program for children in Ho Tram by Kennedy – one 91勛圖厙 Grade 10 student. Kennedy developed her MYP Project to improve water safety among Vung Tau youngsters in response to a social need and her own passion.

The final projects of the students demonstrate the MYP’s commitment to providing students with a worthwhile learning experience by letting them follow their passions, hone their skills, and gain practical experience.

Being asked for advice for working on a year-long project, Hwan – one Grade 10 student working on his personal project of Mindful Journaling, highlighted the creativity aspect of the project and the importance of choosing a project that captures your interest:

So that you wont lose interest, and dont lose passion throughout the project

Students find it really interesting working on their year-long projects. Quoc – another Grade 10 student with the project focusing on electronic music

SHCMC always makes things better, more joyful and more interesting for students

Not to mention that, our G10s students have received such conscientious help from our amazing teachers and staff – those who constantly strive to help the students showcasing their exceptional work to the community.

Overall, MYP Project allows students to develop their passions, skills, and creativity, as well as aids them with vital skills and mindset to get ready for their upcoming IBDP project.

Rhino Academy is Back for Term 4

Have you, as parents, ever considered taking classes again? If not, it might be worth your while to explore Rhino Academy, an exclusive educational series for ISHCMC parents.

This program offers engaging and informative classes, workshops, and more, covering a diverse range of topics such as cooking, yoga, and digital design, taught by specialized teachers and parents of 91勛圖厙.

Despite being labeled as “classes,” which might sound intimidating to some, the Rhino Academy sessions go beyond mere instructions. The sessions offer parents the opportunity to actively be a part of the 91勛圖厙 community that their children are already a part of. By learning new skills and experiences, parents can gain insights into how 91勛圖厙 delivers education. Furthermore, Ms. Evan Johnson – the coordinator of the program also shared that parents can recall their past school life by:

Learning, struggling with unfamiliar knowledge and creating memories.

Although classes are English based, our instructors aim to make the lessons simple to understand. During class discussions with fellow parents and instructors, parents can improve their language skills and adapt to the language in a realistic context. For those who have concerns about language barriers, Mrs. Mayu Murata, the co-coordinator of the program, highly encourages you to sign-up for the series since this would be:

A great chance to step into the English community that 91勛圖厙 can offer to our parents.

Mrs. Mayu Murata and Ms. Evan Johnson - The coordinators of Rhino Academy

ISHCMC hosts ASIST workshop

The International School of Ho Chi Minh City (91勛圖厙) recently welcomed, suicide prevention organization, LivingWorks, to hold Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). The two-day workshop, held in collaboration with ABC School International, is designed to help guide educators and professionals with how to intervene and prevent suicide. To date, over two million people around the world have participated in this award-winning program, and 91勛圖厙 opened its doors to other schools educators to come join and benefit from the essential training.

Speaking about the workshop, Kim Green, 91勛圖厙s Head of School, shared,

“Our school is proud to host this incredibly important training and to be able to offer it to not only our staff but also other schools in the community. At 91勛圖厙, wellbeing, being incredibly important to a childs development, is a core foundation of who we are, and as educators, it’s important that we equip ourselves with the necessary knowledge to provide a safe and supportive environment for our students.

She went on to share

The ASIST program is an excellent opportunity for educators and professionals obtain a much better understanding of suicide prevention and become equipped with the skills needed to save lives and promote mental health. We are proud to host this training and look forward to working with other schools in Vietnam to promote mental health and well-being.”

Ran by the organisation , a leading provider of suicide intervention and prevention training, ASIST is an evidence-based program that provides practical and effective training in this area of mental health. The sessions equip individuals with the necessary skills to recognize the signs of suicide, teach them how to intervene, provide support to individuals at risk, and connect those at risk with appropriate resources. Participants, who included both educators, counselors and other professionals in the educational industry took part in interactive activities, case studies, and specialized exercises to help participants apply what they have learnt to real-life situations.

ISHCMC was fortunate enough to welcome Lindy McGregor from the organization Living Works who helped lead the training session. Lindy has worked in the field of suicide prevention for over 30 years and is one of the most experienced suicide prevention skills trainers in the world. She shared, Suicide is a significant public health challenge that impacts every community and every demographic in every country. But the statistics for deaths by suicide are just the tip of the iceberg. So many more people have suicide attempts & even larger numbers consider ending their own lives. Studies indicate that 5% of the general population consider suicide every year, but they also inform us that the proportion of young people who think about suicide is more than double that.

For schools, ASIST is essential as it equips educators with the tools to recognize and intervene in cases of suicide. In a school environment, educators are uniquely positioned to identify the warning signs of suicide and provide support to at-risk students. Through ASIST training, educators can learn how to approach and intervene in situations where a student may be experiencing suicidal ideation, making it a critical component in promoting mental health and well-being among young people.

LivingWorks believes that everyone has a role to play in addressing the issue of suicide and that anyone can develop the necessary skills to support choices leading to greater safety. Taking a community-based and collaborative approach is essential to planning and development.

Speaking on the impact of the workshop itself and how it will benefit our teachers, professionals, students and wider community, Lindy went on to share.

School communities are large, busy places. If suicide prevention efforts are concentrated in a single area, such as the counselling centre, they wont be able to reach everyone. LivingWorks training brings life-saving skills to other members of the school community, who are in key positions of trust & have regular contact with students. This enables a broad-based impact.

Following the workshop, Hana Adams, one of 91勛圖厙s Designated Safeguarding Leads reflected, Being able to attend the ASIST with members of the counseling team, grade level leaders and the safeguarding leads allows us as a school to approach suicide disclosures and interventions in a clear and systematic manner where stakeholders use similar language and perspectives

Following the engaging, informative and practical ASIST workshops, participants left with a much better understanding and knowledge to recognize the signs of suicide and provide support to those at risk. Moving forward, 91勛圖厙 looks to continue to provide such opportunities whereby educators, mental health professionals, and anyone working with young people can learn such life-saving skills and promote mental health and well-being.

Celebrating Diversity: Effective Ways to Promote Inclusivity in International Schools /news-and-blog/celebrating-diversity-effective-ways-to-promote-inclusivity-in-international-schools/ Wed, 22 Mar 2023 05:07:49 +0000 /?p=9699 The post Celebrating Diversity: Effective Ways to Promote Inclusivity in International Schools appeared first on ISHCMC.

Celebrating diversity effective ways to promote inclusivity in international schools

International schools are increasingly becoming a popular choice for parents who want their children to receive a culturally diverse and academically rigorous education.

With increased Diversity comes the responsibility of creating a safe and welcoming learning environment for all students. Promoting anti-racism in the school setting is one of the best ways to ensure this. This thought leadership post will explore how educators and parents can work together to create a culture of respect and acceptance in the school community.

Create an Equity Statement:

The first step in promoting anti-racism in any school setting is to create a clear equity statement or policy outlining unacceptable behavior. The message should include language that explicitly addresses racism and other forms of discrimination, such as sexism, homophobia, and ableism. It’s essential to clearly outline the consequences for violating the policy so that everyone understands what will happen if the agreements are not respected.

What ISHCMC does:

We have established an equity statement and in 23/24 will communicate clearly to all students, staff, and parents the agreements within that statement as well as the consequences of not adhering to the agreements.

Provide Education on Diversity:

For students to understand why anti-racism is critical and how to promote it within their schools, they need opportunities to learn from one another. Learnings could include classroom discussions about different cultures and identities or educational assemblies featuring guest speakers from underrepresented backgrounds. It’s also essential to ensure teachers are knowledgeable about diversity issues to facilitate these discussions effectively.

What 91勛圖厙 does:

  • Provide space and time for students to engage in difficult conversations
  • Ask students to reflect on their identity and who they are
  • Engage in discussions about stereotypes and racism
  • Reflect on what it means to be a global citizen
  • Consider ways in which our mission focuses on attributes of DEIJAB+
  • Help students to understand and focus on the DEIJ language
  • Connect the Learner Profile to sense of self

Encourage Student Involvement

In addition to providing educational resources on diversity topics, it’s necessary to actively involve students in creating a culture of respect within their school community. Create student groups or clubs focusing on social justice issues or through activities like holding schoolwide rallies or protests against racism or bigotry. It’s also beneficial for students to have regular, varied opportunities for dialogue about sensitive subject matters so that everyone feels comfortable expressing their thoughts without fear of judgment or ridicule.

What 91勛圖厙 does:

  • Provide a safe environment for students to advocate for themselves concerning issues connected to DEIJAB+
  • Use the POSISH programme to provide a space for students to express themselves freely

Promoting anti-racism in international school settings takes time and effort but ultimately leads to stronger communities where everyone feels respected regardless of race or cultural background. By establishing clear policies on racism and discrimination, providing education on diversity topics, and encouraging student involvement, educators and parents can work together towards creating a safe learning environment where all members feel welcome and accepted. With dedication from both sides, we can make sure our international schools are places where every child has an equal opportunity to succeed without fear of prejudice or hate speech.

IB vs British Curriculum And Others

The International Baccalaureate (IB School) – What is it? Why is it good for my child? If it’s so good, then why have I not heard about it before?泭

For many parents, whose school experience may seem like a distant memory, making a decision about your childs education programme is rightly a daunting task. In fact, most parents are often never faced with this decision due to the nature of a national curriculum. As with a host of other decisions that must be made when moving countries, this decision can often feel like the most difficult.

For over 40 years an International Baccalaureate (IB) education has helped future generations cross the boundaries that separate languages, countries and cultures. Today, the IB continues that tradition providing a continuum of international education that features four high quality programmes for students from 3-19 years old.

The IB consists of three individual programmes. The , and the . While each of these qualifications forms a pathway into the next, they can also be studied independently of one another. Consequently, you may find that some schools offer all three qualifications, while others only offer one or two. Any school wishing to offer one or more of the IB programs must first be authorized to become an IB World School through the International Baccalaureate organization.

What makes the IB different from state-based national curriculums?

1. Global Recognition & Outlook

The IB develops inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through education that builds intercultural understanding and respect. One of the central aims of the IB is to promote intercultural understanding and respect, not as an alternative to a sense of cultural and national identity, but as an essential part of life in the 21st century.

The IB is taught to over 1,950,000 students in 5,400 schools across 159 countries.

2. Well-rounded Education

The IB programmes develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who are motivated to succeed, giving students distinct advantages by building their critical thinking skills, nurturing their curiosity and their ability to solve complex problems. A key advantage of the IB is that it allows students to hone in on their areas of strength and, through development, improve on areas of weakness. As such, students are exposed to a much larger breadth of subjects than most national curriculums – one of the reasons why the IB is considered so challenging.

3. University Preparation

The IB Diploma is effectively designed to prepare learners for university, in that it teaches you skills and ways of learning that will set you up to do well at a tertiary education level. The heavy workload and the idea that students in the IB, learn to learn, mean that IB students are often well prepared for university life.

For example, DP students were three times more likely than similar A level students to enroll in a top 20 higher educational institution (Duxbury et a., 2021).

4. Curriculum Structure

A key difference between the IB and other state-based curricula is the curriculum structure. In the IB Diploma Programme, IB students must study one subject from the arts, sciences, humanities, mathematics, as well as English and a foreign language. On average, three of these subjects are taken at a “higher level”, where students must show greater knowledge, understanding and skill. The other three subjects are taken at a standard level. Students also complete a 100-hour subject on the theory of knowledge and write a 4000-word extended essay on a topic of their choice. As well as academic requirements students must participate in creative, sporting and service activities.

10 Reasons to Choose The IB Programme in Vietnam

At International School Ho Chi Minh City, we are proud to offer the International Baccalaureate in Vietnam curriculum. With the aim of creating internationally-minded and well-rounded individuals the IB programmes align perfectly with our Mission, Vision and Values.

As the first IB World School in Vietnam, we offer the full suite of IB Programmes – preparing students aged 3-19 years old for success after 91勛圖厙. Students in 91勛圖厙 are able to study the IB Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) – ages 3-12, the IB Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) – ages 11-16, and the IB Diploma Programme (IB DP) – ages 16-19.

Designed in Geneva in 1968, the (IB) is an academically challenging program of study, designed to prepare students for success at university and life beyond. Its purpose is to give students around the world a chance to earn a rigorous, internationally recognized diploma, which can be used for entry into top universities around the world.

At the core of the International Baccalaureate is the idea that IB learners are positively challenged to think critically and to learn in a flexible environment crossing disciplinary, cultural and national boundaries (). Through the IB Learner Profile (see our blog here), students studying the IB form lifelong skills that form the basis of their success in the years that follow their education.
