Where Passion Meets Purpose: Celebrating Our Grade 10 Personal Projects

Over the past six months, our Grade 10 students dedicated themselves to transforming their passion ideas into impactful products, which they proudly shared at the Personal Project Fair and Celebration.

At 91勛圖厙, we are committed to supporting and challenging students to become confident, independent learners who are prepared for the future. The Personal Project is a powerful reflection of this commitment where students build and demonstrate independent research, critical thinking, and self-reflection, which are foundational skills for success in the Diploma Programme and beyond.

Academically, the Personal Project is a cornerstone for Grade 10 students, representing the culmination of five years of learning in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) through student-led inquiry, action, and reflection.

Through this year-long process, students are challenged to explore a topic of personal interest, conduct extensive research, create a product with real-world impact or provoke a meaningful call-to-action, and reflect on their learning.

Each Personal Project is more than a testament to the rigor, challenge, and purpose that define learning at 91勛圖厙. It is a students passion brought to life.

This years Personal Project Fair was filled with innovation and creativity, displaying projects with a wide range of interests. From creating an online gallery to the universe, manufacturing custom socks for dancers, to developing a beginner-friendly running plan, and sewing a princess dress, the projects reflected not only students dedication to independent learning, but also their identities, interests, and desire to make meaningful contributions to the community.泭

One of the first students to present at the fair, Emerson, captured the audiences attention with a Spanish quote as he introduced his Personal Project: a comprehensive bible for stage management. As a dedicated student-actor in our Secondary Theatre Productions, Emerson shared that the process provided him the space to explore a possible future pathway, and also reinforced my passion for acting.

Another Grade 10 student, Tiara, approached raising awareness about highly stigmatized issues, eating disorders, with a completely different spin. She leveraged her strength for writing and explored the disorders through a creative lens. This project showed me the severity of mental health, and influenced the way I approached people, shared Tiara.

Her peer, Saeah, decided to utilize this independent learning opportunity to build foundational skills for animation, her passion for her future career. Upon encountering several difficulties in this year-long project, she noted that the experience gave her valuable insight for her university journey and beyond.

The Personal Project represents success not only in the final product, but in the growth our students experience along the way: learning to set goals, overcome challenges, utilize strengths, and take ownership of their learning.

Grade 10 Students Excel in MYP Personal Projects at 91勛圖厙

Recently, our Grade 10 students completed their MYP Personal Project, during which they worked on meaningful projects inspired by local community needs

As an world school, ISHCMC always strives for students to take charge of their own learning and support them in building future-ready skills so they may flourish in a world that is changing quickly and make a difference. With that being said, one of the opportunities students can have at 91勛圖厙 is working on their MYP project.

Students can develop the characteristics of the IB learner profile with the MYP (Middle Years Programme) personal project. It supports their growth as independent, lifelong learners and gives them a crucial opportunity to put into practice and deepen the approaches to learning skills they have learned throughout the MYP.

The students spent almost a year creating innovative solutions to contribute to positive changes in society and then presented them to the 91勛圖厙 community. You can learn more about the project by checking out the 3 interviews with our G10 students in the clips found in this article.

Thanks to the diversity and the creativity of our Grade 10 students many interesting innovations were being presented, namely the swimming training program for children in Ho Tram by Kennedy – one 91勛圖厙 Grade 10 student. Kennedy developed her MYP Project to improve water safety among Vung Tau youngsters in response to a social need and her own passion.

The final projects of the students demonstrate the MYP’s commitment to providing students with a worthwhile learning experience by letting them follow their passions, hone their skills, and gain practical experience.

Being asked for advice for working on a year-long project, Hwan – one Grade 10 student working on his personal project of Mindful Journaling, highlighted the creativity aspect of the project and the importance of choosing a project that captures your interest:

So that you wont lose interest, and dont lose passion throughout the project

Students find it really interesting working on their year-long projects. Quoc – another Grade 10 student with the project focusing on electronic music

SHCMC always makes things better, more joyful and more interesting for students

Not to mention that, our G10s students have received such conscientious help from our amazing teachers and staff – those who constantly strive to help the students showcasing their exceptional work to the community.

Overall, MYP Project allows students to develop their passions, skills, and creativity, as well as aids them with vital skills and mindset to get ready for their upcoming IBDP project.

Ascendancy Youth Model United Nations Conference 2022 held at 91勛圖厙

[12-14th July 2022] This summer 91勛圖厙 Secondary was proud to host the Youth Ascendancy Model United Nations (YASMUN), a non-governmental organization based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. YASMUN hosted the 3-day event simulating a United Nations () conference, where participants role-played as delegates and represented the stance of their assigned countries on a host of global issues.

ISHCMC was thrilled to welcome back two graduates who were critical in the running of the event. Katie Dang, a proud Class of 2021 alum and Nguyen Trong Khang (TK), a proud Class of 2022 alum. As both the Secretary-General and Deputy Secretary-General respectively of YASMUN 2022, Katie and TK led a professional yet friendly event that allowed every participant to engage in various global issues that are incredibly pertinent to todays world.

On YASMUNs website, Katie describes how her journey started five years ago in Grade 8. Being a shy and introverted person back then, the idea of giving a speech in front of a crowd was almost an impossible task. However the engaging and stimulating nature of MUN captivated me she said. While honouring the hard work of numerous members of our community, Katie said, our team would not have been able to run the event without the enthusiastic support from the relevant departments of 91勛圖厙”.

The engaging and stimulating nature of MUN captivated me!

Katie Dang (Class of 2021), Deputy Secretary-General of YASMUN 2022

ISHCMC students have the opportunity to participate in the Model United Nations (MUN) from Grade 8 onwards. As an After School Activity (ASA), the MUN allows students in the Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme to hone their skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing and research. In addition, the Model UN often provides the first entry point into international affairs and introduces students to the wide range of peace and security, human rights, development and rule of law issues that are on the UN agenda. The Model UN is a popular activity for students interested in learning more about how the UN operates, with hundreds of thousands of students worldwide taking part every year at all educational levels.

IB Results 2022 - Meet the students that are flourishing at 91勛圖厙

What an amazing year for International School Ho Chi Minh Citys class of 2022. Through adversity and two years of sheer resilience every student has flourished in their own way. The highlights of 2022 IB results are:

As one of the leading international schools in Vietnam, 91勛圖厙 has a rich 28 year history of student achievement. The class of 2022 was no exception, with one student, Seoyeon Hong, achieving a perfect score of 45 points in the IB Diploma.

Mike Hebert, 91勛圖厙 Director of Admissions & Market Growth, said

the result puts her in the 99.7th percentile amongst students studying the IB Diploma Programme globally. That is a true testament to the education students at 91勛圖厙 are receiving and one that the whole community is proud of.

Seoyeon Hong, who achieved a perfect score.

Another student that has flourished under 91勛圖厙s educational environment is Junsoo Chung. Junsoo Chung joined 91勛圖厙 in grade 2. Junsoo recounts I arrived at school with no English language. On my first day, a classmate shared with me a copy of Star Wars – that book helped me kickstart my English skills. Junsoo is one of many recent graduates from 91勛圖厙s class of 22 and is a shining example of the 91勛圖厙 learner. As the president of the 91勛圖厙 Entrepreneur Society, he has networked with people from different backgrounds and engaged with diverse perspectives. Scoring a 7 (the highest grade possible) in Biology, Mathematics Analysis & Approaches, and Business Management Junsoo hopes to take what he has learned at 91勛圖厙 and apply it to his further education where he will be attending Boston College. His ultimate goal is, to work with an NGO and institutionalize climate education in South East Asia. I want to make sure every school has a climate curriculum, he explains.

Another recent graduate, Nguyen Lily泭 Khanh Binh, started her 91勛圖厙 journey in grade 3. What I appreciate most about 91勛圖厙 is its sense of community. Because there are people from so many different backgrounds there is always a group for everyone, Lily says. Having received a perfect score of 7 in Psychology and 35 points overall, she plans to major in Sociology at Pepperdine University. Lily tells us that it was the experiences and opportunities in her Theater class that sparked her interest in the field, it was all about making connections – something that reflects our society and the social issues were dealing with. 91勛圖厙 made me more curious and made me think about how we connect with each other.

The IB Diploma Programme also allowed Japanese student, Karen Oda, the opportunity to flourish. Joining in grade 9, Karen found life at 91勛圖厙 to be incredibly rewarding. Art was my favorite subject – it allowed me to express not only myself but my individual culture. Karen has been given an unconditional offer to the University of Adelaide, ranked in the Top 100 universities in the world, to study Nutrition. As she looks back on her education she says, I am very grateful that 91勛圖厙 gave me the opportunity to discover my passion.

A member of 91勛圖厙s swim team and long serving house captain, Drew Moreno explains, theres always been a culture of care at 91勛圖厙 and I think thats really important when you move to a new school. The school has changed so much since I arrived 11 years ago but its sense of community has stayed the same”. Having achieved 37 total points and a 7 in his Environmental Systems & Societies subject, Drew has accepted an offer to Wheaton College where he will be furthering his passion for environmental sustainability. 91勛圖厙 allowed me to discover passions I didnt think I had and the teachers have always made it really easy to reach out to them, he said as he reflected on his time at school.

A moment to celebrate.

Its graduates like these that show just how critical it is that education goes beyond the traditional classroom. In an uncertain future the responsibility placed on education is more important than ever. It is the responsibility of schools to equip all learners with the tools they need to navigate life in the 21st century. While learning will always present us with challenges we know that the programmes at 91勛圖厙 offer great opportunities whilst supporting our learners through their learning journeys.

ISHCMC, the first international school in Ho Chi Minh City and first to offer the full International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, recognises the important role education plays in allowing students to make choices in often complex and ambiguous environments. 91勛圖厙 utilizes the flexibility of the International Baccalaureate programs to encourage an inclusive, broad and balanced approach to learning through inquiry, exploration of concepts, principled and caring citizenship, creative problem solving, collaboration, communication and connectivity.

Through the Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme, students like Seoyeon, Junsoon, Lily, Karen and Drew develop the foundational skills that prepare them for excellence long after they leave school. The IB programmes provide an education that enables learners to make sense of the world around them resulting in internationally-minded people, equipping them with the skills and dispositions needed for taking responsible action for the future. Furthermore, the education at 91勛圖厙 at all grades crosses disciplinary, cultural, national, and geographical boundaries.

Kim Green, 91勛圖厙s Head of School, explains students are encouraged to learn the skills and attitudes necessary to have ownership and take responsibility for their learning and their lives. Ms. Green goes on to say that through learning in a collaborative, constructive environment our students deepen their understanding and create new perspectives that prepare them for life beyond 91勛圖厙.

IB vs British Curriculum And Others

The International Baccalaureate (IB School) – What is it? Why is it good for my child? If it’s so good, then why have I not heard about it before?泭

For many parents, whose school experience may seem like a distant memory, making a decision about your childs education programme is rightly a daunting task. In fact, most parents are often never faced with this decision due to the nature of a national curriculum. As with a host of other decisions that must be made when moving countries, this decision can often feel like the most difficult.

For over 40 years an International Baccalaureate (IB) education has helped future generations cross the boundaries that separate languages, countries and cultures. Today, the IB continues that tradition providing a continuum of international education that features four high quality programmes for students from 3-19 years old.

The IB consists of three individual programmes. The , and the . While each of these qualifications forms a pathway into the next, they can also be studied independently of one another. Consequently, you may find that some schools offer all three qualifications, while others only offer one or two. Any school wishing to offer one or more of the IB programs must first be authorized to become an IB World School through the International Baccalaureate organization.

What makes the IB different from state-based national curriculums?

1. Global Recognition & Outlook

The IB develops inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through education that builds intercultural understanding and respect. One of the central aims of the IB is to promote intercultural understanding and respect, not as an alternative to a sense of cultural and national identity, but as an essential part of life in the 21st century.

The IB is taught to over 1,950,000 students in 5,400 schools across 159 countries.

2. Well-rounded Education

The IB programmes develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who are motivated to succeed, giving students distinct advantages by building their critical thinking skills, nurturing their curiosity and their ability to solve complex problems. A key advantage of the IB is that it allows students to hone in on their areas of strength and, through development, improve on areas of weakness. As such, students are exposed to a much larger breadth of subjects than most national curriculums – one of the reasons why the IB is considered so challenging.

3. University Preparation

The IB Diploma is effectively designed to prepare learners for university, in that it teaches you skills and ways of learning that will set you up to do well at a tertiary education level. The heavy workload and the idea that students in the IB, learn to learn, mean that IB students are often well prepared for university life.

For example, DP students were three times more likely than similar A level students to enroll in a top 20 higher educational institution (Duxbury et a., 2021).

4. Curriculum Structure

A key difference between the IB and other state-based curricula is the curriculum structure. In the IB Diploma Programme, IB students must study one subject from the arts, sciences, humanities, mathematics, as well as English and a foreign language. On average, three of these subjects are taken at a “higher level”, where students must show greater knowledge, understanding and skill. The other three subjects are taken at a standard level. Students also complete a 100-hour subject on the theory of knowledge and write a 4000-word extended essay on a topic of their choice. As well as academic requirements students must participate in creative, sporting and service activities.

Designed in Geneva in 1968, the (IB) is an academically challenging program of study, designed to prepare students for success at university and life beyond. Its purpose is to give students around the world a chance to earn a rigorous, internationally recognized diploma, which can be used for entry into top universities around the world.
